About Us

Hello, and thank you for visiting Better Milky Days!

I'm Asha, Mum to two busy boys (4 and 2), and founder of the brand Better Milky Days. My roots are working as a Registered Nurse in the special care nursery, completing my course for being a Lactation Consultant and now this!

Both my breastfeeding journeys were challenging in their own ways and I have a lot of time and empathy for new mums trying to learn the ropes and making decisions for what is best for their baby.

I started Better Milky Days, based off my own breastfeeding journeys with my two boys. They were both vastly different and had their own unique challenges. Both of which I was unprepared for. It struck me, how much more there was to know about breastfeeding, and that it wasn’t just a matter of ‘coming naturally’. That it was in fact something I had to learn, invest in, and needed a whole bit of determination to get through it. Not to mention the support.

I can truly say, that I wouldn’t have been able to breastfeed ‘successfully’ without the right support and advice at the right time. Some of it I had to go to lengths to seek out myself and other times I was lucky to have the resources. There is absolutely no judgement when it comes to breastfeeding, because I experienced first hand the desire to give up multiple times!! Had it not been for the right knowledge and tools to equip me to keep going, and even then it was only up to me.

There is a lot more to say about each of the obstacles I faced with breastfeeding, which I think I’ll save for another day. But it motivated me to complete my study as a Lactation Consultant, and want to start this business being there for other women in a way I wish I’d had.

Mason had a cows milk protein allergy (CMPA) diagnosed at 8 weeks. I’d only just found my way with breastfeeding and I was shocked to learn that I had to cut dairy out of my diet to continue. I wasn’t ready to give up, but it was a steep learning curve finding the right foods to eat.

Reuben, he suffered severe eczema and we went through so much (distressing) breast refusal with him, I was constantly trying to find the source. Cutting out dairy and soy (was extremely difficult!) and made no difference. At 6 months of age we found out he had multiple IgE allergies to Wheat, Egg and Peanuts. I was crushed! I had no idea about being gluten free and most gluten free/vegan alternatives contained nuts! I felt paralysed at the shops. All my dairy free alternative cooking couldn’t help me now.

It took me a month. The month that I was meant to be returning to work! To research, shop, cook from scratch, find a gluten free/vegan bread (turns out they all have egg white!), plus starting Reuben on solids. Safe to say I was stressed and desperate. My supply really did take a hit, and breastfeeding up until this point had always been stressful.

I started Better Milky Days because I felt so alone. There were no gluten free vegan lactation products on the market that weren’t full of sugar or just plain boring. I was determined to fill the gap.

Providing lactation products that are allergen friendly not only provides options. It’s says to mum’s going through the same thing “you are not alone” and “we’ve got you”. It also sends the message that you absolutely CAN continue to breastfeed an allergy baby, that finding out your baby has allergies DOES NOT mean the end of your breastfeeding journey like so many (well meaning) people encouraged me to do.

Better Milky Days is YUMMY lactation alternatives for mums breastfeeding babies with allergies. It’s less of a sacrifice when you can find the right support and the right things to eat and nourish your body and give you energy throughout the day.

Now, I also work as a nurse in the special care nursery, supporting mums and educating parents for discharge. I love doing the home visits with prem babies that have left the nursery. I also get the privilege of working in the Breastfeeding Support role on postnatal ward, running a breastfeeding class and supporting women through those early feeds to establish good attachment. I have completed my course to be a lactation consultant and am waiting to sit my exam this year to qualify as an IBCLC.

Better Milky Days is so much more to me than ‘just some side hustle’. It’s building a community of women, to feel seen and heard and equip them with the right support to continue on their breastfeeding journey. I’m here for that, and I’m here for you.

Asha x
